adirondacks 2005 - day two

Adirondacks Trip - Second Day - August 23, 2005

Each day Bill Earl was the first awake (as usual).  When Andy or Paul awoke they found Bill sitting down by the pond, contemplating the morning mists with a cup of coffee.

Breakfast was scrambled eggs for the kids, and Huevos Migas with black beans for the adults.  Yummy as always.

Bill and Bill both rented canoes for the day for $35 each, and went canoeing with their kids.  The canoes were delivered to the sites.

This was a shopping day for Andy and Paul.   We had put together the following list of items:

• Coleman pressure regulator (for Eric's stove)

• Water jugs - although the water spigot was nearby, we needed something bigger than an MSR dromedary bag.

• Firewood

• Storage box

• Breath Right strips for Paul.

• Stove lighter.

• Orange Juice for Eric.

• Hand Sanitizer

• Hot chocolate

• M&M's for GORP.

• ICE

• Canned hash (unavailable at the Price Chopper in Lake George)

Paul and I left around 10 AM.  We first drove to Indian Lake, stopping for a quick coffee, then going to Pine's Country Store ("Tim says if we don't have it you don't need it.")   Although they are unbelievably well stocked with all kinds of things, we were unable to find the regulator for Eric's stove.  We did buy two 5 gallon plastic water jugs ($16, paid by Paul).   I purchased a map (The Adirondacks - Central Mountains), and a Sterilite 66 quart plastic storage box in which to store our fruit and vegetables.

We decided to head west to Old Forge NY, where I had previously identified DiOrio's Supermarket via a web search.

It was about 10 miles back up past our campground to Blue Mountain Lake and then another 25 miles west to the town of Inlet.  We stopped at several stores enroute but were unable to find the stove part.

Inlet is a bustling little tourist town.  We stopped here at the Inlet Department Store / ACE hardware store.   We were unable to find the stove part here either.  We decided instead to buy a large cooking grate to allow us to cook food over the fire ($11.99), paid for by Andy.  We also got a Weber butane stove lighter ($3.99), a Coleman trunk storage organizer (for Andy, $7.99), and an insulated mug ($9.99) for Eric.  Andy paid for all of these by Visa.  It was about noon, so we went to the "Moose Caboose", an old caboose turned into a little restaurant (cooking inside, seating outside on the deck).   The food was passable.   While in Inlet we also went to the information office (to pee and ask about a pharmacy).

Our next stop was the even larger tourist town of Old Forge about 10 miles further west.  Here we went to the supermarket (see above) to get hash, ice, M&Ms, hot chocolate, orange juice, pre-made garlic bread, and some beer (unplanned, but they had some good local brands).   Then we went to the pharmacy to get Breath Right Strips for Paul and Hand Sanitizer for the site.  Paul paid for these.

On the way back to the campground we stopped at a place we had seen "Firewood - two bundles for $5) and got two bundles.  We were back to our campground about 2:30 PM.  The only thing we had been unable to find on our trip was the Coleman stove regulator.

For dinner the kids had english muffin pizzas and the adults had steak with a special coffee/chili rub cooked over the fire, mashed potatoes and a mushroom topping.

The Bills and their kids went canoeing, and later in the date Marc went canoeing with Bill Earl and the kids.  They were out a couple of hours.
