Cooking on the fire.
Our first night in Baxter we discovered that my two burner Coleman propane stove was dead! Luckily we remembered the "old way" of cooking.
The next day Paul and I drove into Millinocket and bought a new one while Marc and Eric hiked the Owl (see Eric's excellent pictures).

Hail to the Chef!
Happy campers on our first night. Picture by lantern light.

What's up doc?
This rabbit came into the brush beside our campsite. We were able to walk right up to him. First non timid rabbit I've ever met.

Katahdin Stream Campsite
Campsite #22 at Katahdin Stream campground. Nice size, but very exposed (little privacy). Road into campground (which is also the Appalacian Trail) runs behind campsite, just up a bit from the rock behind the picnic table shelter.
Did get to see a lot of (very lean and strong) through hikers ending their journeys.

Prep-ing breakfast
Paul discovers Eric's diet Dr. Pepper which I had put in the cooler the night before.

Relaxing
Paul relaxing with a beer (or is it Scotch). On the table to his left is a package of Strawberries.

Katahdin Stream Falls
Our second full day at Baxter Andy, Paul and Marc set out to hike the Baxter peak. Marc was not sure how far he would make it because his knees were killing him from hiking The Owl with Eric the day before.
The route from Katahdin Stream Campground to Baxter Peak follows the Hunt Trail, and is also the northern-most section of the Appalacian Trail.
This is the stunning Katahdin Stream Falls, 1.2 miles from camp.

Tree line
On the Hunt Trail, we are approaching the tree line. The ridged mountain in the background is Doubletop (3984 ft).

The Flying Scott
This picture was taken on top of a large boulder where everyone seemed to be stopping for pictures.

"The Cave"
A "slab" cave, 2.7 miles up the mountain from camp.

The Hunt gets steep.
The table land begins at top of this picture. This was by far the steepest part of the climb.

The old man of the moutnains
Barren Mtn (3696 ft), and behind it the pointed peak of Mt OJI (3434 ft). The two moutnains to right rear of picture are South Brother Mtn (3970 ft) to the left and North Brother Mtn (4151 ft) to the right. Doubletop is directly behind me.
